Rules for Interaction

30 seconds to 60 seconds to get where you need to go

Anything deeper than 5 clicks becomes annoying

Once user gets to web page which they consider terminal-

DLP Work Flow Model

This posting displays a link to a work flow schematic created during discussion with Tom and Trebor on 1/27 and 2/3 2005.

The basic idea is to identify key areas in the interface and key object types in the database. The basic object in the interface is a Resource which are organized by a Subject Ontology. The subject ontology defines the metadata for Resources and provides the database for the Search Tool. Resources are linked to Modules and Modules are linke to Projects. The Module has been identified as the content providers interface. During the creation of a module content providers could upload new resources.

Goals, Resources, Milestones, Scope

The Ed Tech Center can provide planning, design, programming / testing and implementation support for your project. You will note that we start with planning and design. I think you have found our recent consultation on the DLP to be meaningful. I believe the DLP would have benefitted in even greater ways had we been involved in the earlier planning and design phases of your project. We would like to begin a formal work flow with you on delivering a web based collaboration environment for submission, editing, building and deploying content in the DLP. It is vital that we come together in this effort and that no part of the DLP project is moved forward without our consultation. In order for us to serve you effectively we must be a key player in the continuing development of this project.

We have a full schedule of projects for the next quarter. However we can commit some staff time (myself and a GA) on design and programming if the project goals, responsibilities and timelines are well defined. We need to confident of your schedules and time commitments. The DLP is a large project. There is a real risk of spreading commitments too thin and not being able to complete the work. To be sure that we completely understand what is before us and what priorities should be given to the project I recommend halting any current work until we can hold a planning meeting with the following agenda:

  • 1) Project goal
    • A) Review the DLP interface design and interaction design (60 min)

(what are the interaction controls and what is intended to happen when the are interacted with)

    • What does a project visitor (student / learning / reviewer who uses a developed project) see and why? (15min)

    • What does a project developer (faculty / presenter / collaborator who builds a project by pulling together DLP content) see and why? (15min)
    • What does a content provider (authorized information specialist who submits content for addition to the DLP) see and why? (15min)

    • What does a content vetter (administrator or super user who doles out approval for user levels and content release) see and why? (15min)

        2) Project Scope

      • A) Review the current state of the project (30 min)

What parts of the project have been started and what state are they in? (15min)

Where do the started parts live and what is their format (code base, software, hardware, address)? (15min)

      • B) Identify the work to be done on the project (30 min)
      • What parts of the project have not been started? (15min)

What format do you see these parts having (code base, software, hardware, address)? (15min)

      3) Personnel Resources

      • A) Identifying who will do what work (15 min)

      4) Setting milestones

      • A) Schedule timelines for work to be done (45 min)

      • B) Schedule regular planning and review meetings (30 min)

I would like to start this process as early as possible in January. The meeting will be very intensive and will take an entire morning or afternoon. Please get back to me with your schedules for the first and second weeks of January. I will ask that you provide documentation for items 1A, 2A, and 2B prior to the meeting (be particular to answer the questions directly and individually. Perhaps this could be the focus of work over the next two weeks.
